Hammer of Glory Cracks Open First Keg of Event

PHILADELPHIA — May 26, 2015 The Hammer of Glory, affectionately known as the “HOG,” will get a sweet ride to start Philly Beer Week thanks to the SugarHouse double-decker bus. As the official sponsor of the Hammer Relay, the casino is offering free rides on Opening Day, May 29, while transporting the iconic Beer Week symbol to numerous Philadelphia bars and breweries.

The tour gets underway at Fox 29 television studios, where Wendy Hamilton, general manager of SugarHouse Casino, will appear on “Good Day Philadelphia,” and concludes at the 23rd Street Armory for the Opening Tap.

“For the next 10 days, Philly will be the beer capital of the world,” said Hamilton. “And we’re glad the SugarHouse bus will provide a safe and fun way to experience all the great brews the city has to offer.”

Beer Week runs May 29—June 7 throughout Philadelphia with the SugarHouse bus departing 330 Market Street at 7:55 a.m. after Hamilton’s appearance on Fox. The HOG tour is an Olympic torch-style relay throughout the city, including a 2 p.m. stop at the casino. The tour culminates with the Opening Tap, where the hammer is used to crack open the first keg of Beer Week.

In addition to hosting the HOG relay, SugarHouse is featuring a Philly Beer Week menu that includes tacos, burgers and a Bavarian pretzel with spicy Irish stout cheese sauce. The beer specials include Yards SugarHouse Ale, Flying Fish Hopfish and Victory Hop Devil. Guests spending $10 on the Philly Beer Week menu receive $25 Match Play.

This is the 8th year for Philly Beer Week—one of the United States’ largest beer festivals. SugarHouse is also participating in the official Philly Beer Week beer garden at Headhouse Square, June 2—7.

SugarHouse, which opened in September 2010 as Philly’s casino, features 1,606 slots, up to 62 table games, fun and unique dining options, riverfront views and free on-site parking. The casino employs approximately 1,100 people, and for four consecutive years has been voted a “Best Place to Work” in the Philadelphia Business Journal, and a “Top Workplace” from four years in a row.
